Forklift Trucks - FAQ

Q: Is wearing a seat belt on a Forklift optional?
A:  If there is a seatbelt fitted, then it should be worn where there is risk of the FLT overturning.

Q. We have multiple operators of FLTs and we leave the keys in the ignition. Is that OK?

A. All keys should be removed from the ignition to prevent unauthorised use. I'd suggest all FLT operators get issued with their own key.

Q. How long is my FLT licence valid for?

A. There is no such thing as a FLT licence. On completion of a FLT course, you will receive a certificate of completion. The certificate does not expire, its for the employer to provide adequate training.

Q: How often should operators have refresher training, and why? A: There is no specific time frame for refreshers. However, the industry recommends between 3-5 years. This is to ensure operators maintain good operating habits. Also, refresher training may be necessary when accidents or near misses take place, or are occasional users and not used the truck in some time.

Q: How often should I inspect my forklift, and why?
A: Daily pre-use checks are mandatory to check for day to day wear and tear. In addition to this, all lifting equipment should have a thorough examination by a competent person.

Q: Do I need training to operate a forklift, and why?
A: Yes. Only trained and authorised operators may use FLTs.

Q: What should I do if my employee reports a defect with my FLT?
A: Prevent all employees operating until it has been over looked by a competent person.
